git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: - Remove eventfs_file descriptor This is the biggest change, and the second part of making eventfs create its files dynamically. In 6.6 the first part was added, and that maintained a one to one mapping between eventfs meta descriptors and the directories and file inodes and dentries that were dynamically created. The directories were represented by a eventfs_inode and the files were represented by a eventfs_file. In v6.7 the eventfs_file is removed. As all events have the same directory make up (sched_switch has an "enable", "id", "format", etc files), the handing of what files are underneath each leaf eventfs directory is moved back to the tracing subsystem via a callback. When an event is added to the eventfs, it registers an array of evenfs_entry's. These hold the names of the files and the callbacks to call when the file is referenced. The callback gets the name so that the same callback may be used by multiple files. The callback then supplies the filesystem_operations structure needed to create this file. This has brought the memory footprint of creating multiple eventfs instances down by 2 megs each! - User events now has persistent events that are not associated to a single processes. These are privileged events that hang around even if no process is attached to them - Clean up of seq_buf There's talk about using seq_buf more to replace strscpy() and friends. But this also requires some minor modifications of seq_buf to be able to do this - Expand instance ring buffers individually Currently if boot up creates an instance, and a trace event is enabled on that instance, the ring buffer for that instance and the top level ring buffer are expanded (1.4 MB per CPU). Analysis of the oops pointed to a struct page with a corrupted compound_head being loaded via page_folio() -> _compound_head() in hash_page_do_lazy_icache(). The access by the mpic code is to an MMIO address, so the expectation is that the struct page for that address would be initialised by init_unavailable_range(), as pointed out by Aneesh. Instrumentation showed that was not the case, which eventually lead to the realisation that pfn_valid() was returning false for that address, causing the struct page to not be initialised. Because the system is using FLATMEM, the version of pfn_valid() in memory_model.h is used: static inline int pfn_valid(unsigned long pfn) { ... return pfn >= pfn_offset && (pfn - pfn_offset) < max_mapnr; } Which relies on max_mapnr being initialised. Early in boot max_mapnr is zero meaning no PFNs are valid. max_mapnr is initialised in mem_init() called via: start_kernel() mm_core_init() # init/main.c:928 mem_init() But that is too late for the usage in init_unavailable_range() called via: start_kernel() setup_arch() # init/main.c:893 paging_init() free_area_init() init_unavailable_range() Although max_mapnr is currently set in mem_init(), the value is actually already available much earlier, as soon as mem_topology_setup() has completed, which is also before paging_init() is called. So move the initialisation there, which causes paging_init() to correctly initialise the struct page and fixes the bug. This bug seems to have been lurking for years, but went unnoticed because the pre-folio code was inspecting the uninitialised page->flags but not dereferencing it. 2023-10-17vga16fb: drop powerpc supportArnd Bergmann
I noticed that commit 0db5b61e0dc07 ("fbdev/vga16fb: Create EGA/VGA devices in sysfb code") broke vga16fb on non-x86 platforms, because the sysfb code never creates a vga-framebuffer device when screen_info.orig_video_isVGA is set to '1' instead of VIDEO_TYPE_VGAC. However, it turns out that the only architecture that has allowed building vga16fb in the past 20 years is powerpc, and this only worked on two 32-bit platforms and never on 64-bit powerpc. The last machine that actually used this was removed in linux-3.10, so this is all dead code and can be removed. The big-endian support in vga16fb.c could also be removed, but I'd just leave this in place. 2023-08-02powerpc: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. init_mm mm_cpumask and context.active_cpus is not maintained at boot and hotplug. This seems to be harmless because init_mm does not have a userspace and so never gets user TLBs flushed, but it looks odd and it prevents some sanity checks being added. Most probe functions do nothing else than checking whether the machine is compatible to a given string. Define that string in ppc_md structure and check it directly from probe_machine() instead of using ppc_md.probe() for that. Keep checking in ppc_md.probe() only for more complex probing. 2023-02-10powerpc/64: Move paca allocation to early_setup()Nicholas Piggin
The early paca and boot cpuid dance is complicated and currently does not quite work as expected for boot cpuid != 0 cases. early_init_devtree() currently allocates the paca_ptrs and boot cpuid paca, but until that returns and early_setup() calls setup_paca(), this thread is currently still executing with smp_processor_id() == 0. One problem this causes is the paca_ptrs[smp_processor_id()] pointer is poisoned, so valid_emergency_stack() (any backtrace) and any similar users will crash. Another is that the hardware id which is set here will not be returned by get_hard_smp_processor_id(smp_processor_id()), but it would work correctly for boot_cpuid == 0, which could lead to difficult to reproduce or find bugs. The hard id does not seem to be used by the rest of early_init_devtree(), it just looks like all this code might have been put here to allocate somewhere to store boot CPU hardware id while scanning the devtree. Rearrange things so the hwid is put in a global variable like boot_cpuid, and do all the paca allocation and boot paca setup in the 64-bit early_setup() after we have everything ready to go. The paca_ptrs[0] re-poisoning code in early_setup does not seem to have ever worked, because paca_ptrs[0] was never not-poisoned when boot_cpuid is not 0. After commit 11ac3e87ce09 ("mm: cma: use pageblock_order as the single alignment") there is an error at boot about the KVM CMA reservation failing, eg: kvm_cma_reserve: reserving 6553 MiB for global area cma: Failed to reserve 6553 MiB That makes it impossible to start KVM guests using the hash MMU with more than 2G of memory, because the VM is unable to allocate a large enough region for the hash page table, eg: $ qemu-system-ppc64 -enable-kvm -M pseries -m 4G ... qemu-system-ppc64: Failed to allocate KVM HPT of order 25: Cannot allocate memory Aneesh pointed out that this happens because when kvm_cma_reserve() is called, pageblock_order has not been initialised yet, and is still zero, causing the checks in cma_init_reserved_mem() against CMA_MIN_ALIGNMENT_PAGES to fail. Fix it by moving the call to kvm_cma_reserve() after initmem_init(). The pageblock_order is initialised in sparse_init() which is called from initmem_init(). Also move the hugetlb CMA reservation. The panic notifiers infrastructure is a bit limited in the scope of the callbacks - basically every kind of functionality is dropped in a list that runs in the same point during the kernel panic path. This is not really on par with the complexities and particularities of architecture / hypervisors' needs, and a refactor is ongoing. As part of this refactor, it was observed that powerpc has 2 notifiers, with mixed goals: one is just a KASLR offset dumper, whereas the other aims to hard-disable IRQs (necessary on panic path), warn firmware of the panic event (fadump) and run low-level platform-specific machinery that might stop kernel execution and never come back. Clearly, the 2nd notifier has opposed goals: disable IRQs / fadump should run earlier while low-level platform actions should run late since it might not even return. Hence, this patch decouples the notifiers splitting them in three: - First one is responsible for hard-disable IRQs and fadump, should run early; - The kernel KASLR offset dumper is really an informative notifier, harmless and may run at any moment in the panic path; - The last notifier should run last, since it aims to perform low-level actions for specific platforms, and might never return. It is also only registered for 2 platforms, pseries and ps3. The patch better documents the notifiers and clears the code too, also removing a useless header. Currently no functionality change should be observed, but after the planned panic refactor we should expect more panic reliability with this patch. Signed-off-by: Guilherme G. 2020-11-02powerpc/64: Set up a kernel stack for secondaries before cpu_restore()Jordan Niethe
Currently in generic_secondary_smp_init(), cur_cpu_spec->cpu_restore() is called before a stack has been set up in r1. This was previously fine as the cpu_restore() functions were implemented in assembly and did not use a stack. However commit 5a61ef74f269 ("powerpc/64s: Support new device tree binding for discovering CPU features") used __restore_cpu_cpufeatures() as the cpu_restore() function for a device-tree features based cputable entry. This is a C function and hence uses a stack in r1. generic_secondary_smp_init() is entered on the secondary cpus via the primary cpu using the OPAL call opal_start_cpu(). In OPAL, each hardware thread has its own stack. The OPAL call is ran in the primary's hardware thread. During the call, a job is scheduled on a secondary cpu that will start executing at the address of generic_secondary_smp_init(). Hence the value that will be left in r1 when the secondary cpu enters the kernel is part of that secondary cpu's individual OPAL stack. This means that __restore_cpu_cpufeatures() will write to that OPAL stack. This is not horribly bad as each hardware thread has its own stack and the call that enters the kernel from OPAL never returns, but it is still wrong and should be corrected. Create the temp kernel stack before calling cpu_restore(). As noted by mpe, for a kexec boot, the secondary CPUs are released from the spin loop at address 0x60 by smp_release_cpus() and then jump to generic_secondary_smp_init(). The call to smp_release_cpus() is in setup_arch(), and it comes before the call to emergency_stack_init(). emergency_stack_init() allocates an emergency stack in the PACA for each CPU. This address in the PACA is what is used to set up the temp kernel stack in generic_secondary_smp_init(). Move releasing the secondary CPUs to after the PACAs have been allocated an emergency stack, otherwise the PACA stack pointer will contain garbage and hence the temp kernel stack created from it will be broken. When kaslr is enabled, the kernel offset is different for every boot. This brings some difficult to debug the kernel. Dump out the kernel offset when panic so that we can easily debug the kernel. This code is derived from x86/arm64 which has similar functionality. We still treat devices without a DMA mask as defaulting to 32-bits for both mask, but a few releases ago we've started warning about such cases, as they require special cases to work around this sloppyness. Add a dma_mask field to struct platform_device so that we can initialize the dma_mask pointer in struct device and initialize both masks to 32-bits by default, replacing similar functionality in m68k and powerpc. The arch_setup_pdev_archdata hooks is now unused and removed. Note that the code looks a little odd with the various conditionals because we have to support platform_device structures that are statically allocated.
