2023-11-21x86/apic: Drop apic::delivery_modeAndrew Cooper
This field is set to APIC_DELIVERY_MODE_FIXED in all cases, and is read exactly once. Fold the constant in uv_program_mmr() and drop the field. Searching for the origin of the stale HyperV comment reveals commit a31e58e129f7 ("x86/apic: Switch all APICs to Fixed delivery mode") which notes: As a consequence of this change, the apic::irq_delivery_mode field is now pointless, but this needs to be cleaned up in a separate patch. 6 years is long enough for this technical debt to have survived. 2023-10-24x86/apic: Provide apic_force_nmi_on_cpu()Thomas Gleixner
When SMT siblings are soft-offlined and parked in one of the play_dead() variants they still react on NMI, which is problematic on affected Intel CPUs. The default play_dead() variant uses MWAIT on modern CPUs, which is not guaranteed to be safe when updated concurrently. Right now late loading is prevented when not all SMT siblings are online, but as they still react on NMI, it is possible to bring them out of their park position into a trivial rendezvous handler. Provide a function which allows to do that. I does sanity checks whether the target is in the cpus_booted_once_mask and whether the APIC driver supports it. Mark X2APIC and XAPIC as capable, but exclude 32bit and the UV and NUMACHIP variants as that needs feedback from the relevant experts. In order to remove the apic::apic_id_valid() callback and switch to checking apic::max_apic_id, it is required to update apic::max_apic_id when the APIC initialization code overrides it via x2apic_set_max_apicid(). Make the existing booleans a bitfield and add a flag which lets the update function and the core code which switches the driver detect whether the apic instance wants to have that update or not and apply it if required. On 64bit it does the actual APIC probing and on 32bit it is used to force select the bigsmp APIC and to emit a redundant message in the apic::setup_apic_routing() callback. 2023-03-21x86/apic/x2apic: Allow CPU cluster_mask to be populated in parallelDavid Woodhouse
Each of the sibling CPUs in a cluster uses the same clustermask. The first CPU in a cluster will need a new clustermask allocated, while subsequent siblings will use the same clustermask as the first. However, the CPU being brought up cannot yet perform memory allocations at the point that this occurs in init_x2apic_ldr(). So at present, the alloc_clustermask() function allocates a clustermask just in case it's needed, storing it in the global cluster_hotplug_mask. A CPU which is the first sibling of a cluster will "take" it from there and set cluster_hotplug_mask to NULL, in order for alloc_clustermask() to allocate a new one before bringing up the next CPU. To facilitate parallel bringup of CPUs in future, switch to a model where alloc_clustermask() prepopulates the clustermask in the per_cpu data for each present CPU in the cluster in advance. All that the CPU needs to do for itself in init_x2apic_ldr() is set its own bit in that mask. The 'node' and 'clusterid' members of struct cluster_mask are thus redundant, and it can become a simple struct cpumask instead. 2021-10-29x86/apic: Reduce cache line misses in __x2apic_send_IPI_mask()Eric Dumazet
Using per-cpu storage for @x86_cpu_to_logical_apicid is not optimal. Broadcast IPI will need at least one cache line per cpu to access this field. __x2apic_send_IPI_mask() is using standard bitmask operators. By converting x86_cpu_to_logical_apicid to an array, we divide by 16x number of needed cache lines, because we find 16 values per cache line. CPU prefetcher can kick nicely. Also move @cluster_masks to READ_MOSTLY section to avoid false sharing. Tested on a dual socket host with 256 cpus, cost for a full broadcast is now 11 usec instead of 33 usec. 2021-02-04x86/apic: Add extra serialization for non-serializing MSRsDave Hansen
Jan Kiszka reported that the x2apic_wrmsr_fence() function uses a plain MFENCE while the Intel SDM (10.12.3 MSR Access in x2APIC Mode) calls for MFENCE; LFENCE. Short summary: we have special MSRs that have weaker ordering than all the rest. Add fencing consistent with current SDM recommendations. This is not known to cause any issues in practice, only in theory. Longer story below: The reason the kernel uses a different semantic is that the SDM changed (roughly in late 2017). The SDM changed because folks at Intel were auditing all of the recommended fences in the SDM and realized that the x2apic fences were insufficient. Why was the pain MFENCE judged insufficient? WRMSR itself is normally a serializing instruction. No fences are needed because the instruction itself serializes everything. But, there are explicit exceptions for this serializing behavior written into the WRMSR instruction documentation for two classes of MSRs: IA32_TSC_DEADLINE and the X2APIC MSRs. Back to x2apic: WRMSR is *not* serializing in this specific case. But why is MFENCE insufficient? MFENCE makes writes visible, but only affects load/store instructions. WRMSR is unfortunately not a load/store instruction and is unaffected by MFENCE. This means that a non-serializing WRMSR could be reordered by the CPU to execute before the writes made visible by the MFENCE have even occurred in the first place. This means that an x2apic IPI could theoretically be triggered before there is any (visible) data to process. Does this affect anything in practice? I honestly don't know. It seems quite possible that by the time an interrupt gets to consume the (not yet) MFENCE'd data, it has become visible, mostly by accident. To be safe, add the SDM-recommended fences for all x2apic WRMSRs. This also leaves open the question of the _other_ weakly-ordered WRMSR: MSR_IA32_TSC_DEADLINE. While it has the same ordering architecture as the x2APIC MSRs, it seems substantially less likely to be a problem in practice. While writes to the in-memory Local Vector Table (LVT) might theoretically be reordered with respect to a weakly-ordered WRMSR like TSC_DEADLINE, the SDM has this to say: In x2APIC mode, the WRMSR instruction is used to write to the LVT entry. The processor ensures the ordering of this write and any subsequent WRMSR to the deadline; no fencing is required. But, that might still leave xAPIC exposed. The safest thing to do for now is to add the extra, recommended LFENCE. 2020-10-28x86/apic: Get rid of apic:: Dest_logicalThomas Gleixner
struct apic has two members which store information about the destination mode: dest_logical and irq_dest_mode. dest_logical contains a mask which was historically used to set the destination mode in IPI messages. Over time the usage was reduced and the logical/physical functions were seperated. There are only a few places which still use 'dest_logical' but they can use 'irq_dest_mode' instead. irq_dest_mode is actually a boolean where 0 means physical destination mode and 1 means logical destination mode. Of course the name does not reflect the functionality. This will be cleaned up in a subsequent change. Remove apic::dest_logical and fixup the remaining users. 2018-05-17x86/apic/x2apic: Initialize cluster ID properlyThomas Gleixner
Rick bisected a regression on large systems which use the x2apic cluster mode for interrupt delivery to the commit wich reworked the cluster management. The problem is caused by a missing initialization of the clusterid field in the shared cluster data structures. So all structures end up with cluster ID 0 which only allows sharing between all CPUs which belong to cluster 0. All other CPUs with a cluster ID > 0 cannot share the data structure because they cannot find existing data with their cluster ID. This causes malfunction with IPIs because IPIs are sent to the wrong cluster and the caller waits for ever that the target CPU handles the IPI. Add the missing initialization when a upcoming CPU is the first in a cluster so that the later booting CPUs can find the data and share it for proper operation. 2017-12-29x86/apic: Switch all APICs to Fixed delivery modeThomas Gleixner
Some of the APIC incarnations are operating in lowest priority delivery mode. This worked as long as the vector management code allocated the same vector on all possible CPUs for each interrupt. Lowest priority delivery mode does not necessarily respect the affinity setting and may redirect to some other online CPU. This was documented somewhere in the old code and the conversion to single target delivery missed to update the delivery mode of the affected APIC drivers which results in spurious interrupts on some of the affected CPU/Chipset combinations. Switch the APIC drivers over to Fixed delivery mode and remove all leftovers of lowest priority delivery mode. Switching to Fixed delivery mode is not a problem on these CPUs because the kernel already uses Fixed delivery mode for IPIs. The reason for this is that th SDM explicitely forbids lowest prio mode for IPIs. The reason is obvious: If the irq routing does not honor destination targets in lowest prio mode then an IPI targeted at CPU1 might end up on CPU0, which would be a fatal problem in many cases. As a consequence of this change, the apic::irq_delivery_mode field is now pointless, but this needs to be cleaned up in a separate patch. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. The target_cpus() callback of the apic struct is not really useful. Some APICs return cpu_online_mask and others cpus_all_mask. The latter is bogus as it does not take holes in the cpus_possible_mask into account. Replace it with cpus_online_mask which makes the most sense and remove the callback. The usage sites will be removed in a later step anyway, so get rid of it now to have incremental changes. The cluster management code creates a cluster mask per cpu, which requires that on cpu on/offline all cluster masks have to be iterated and updated. Other information about the cluster is in different per cpu variables. Create a data structure which holds all information about a cluster and fill it in when the first CPU of a cluster comes online. If another CPU of a cluster comes online it just finds the pointer to the existing cluster structure and reuses it. That simplifies all usage sites and gets rid of quite some pointless iterations over the online cpus to find the cpus which belong to the cluster. Both the per-APIC flag ".wait_for_init_deassert", and the global atomic_t "init_deasserted" are dead code -- remove them. For all APIC types, "wait_for_master()" prevents an AP from proceeding until the BSP has set cpu_callout_mask, making "init_deasserted" {unnecessary}: BSP: <de-assert INIT> ... BSP: {set init_deasserted} AP: wait_for_master() set cpu_initialized_mask wait for cpu_callout_mask BSP: test cpu_initialized_mask BSP: set cpu_callout_mask AP: test cpu_callout_mask AP: {wait for init_deasserted} ... AP: <touch APIC> Deleting the {dead code} above is necessary to enable some parallelism in a future patch.
