2024-04-22Merge branch 'for-uring-ubufops' into HEADJakub Kicinski
Pavel Begunkov says: ==================== implement io_uring notification (ubuf_info) stacking (net part) To have per request buffer notifications each zerocopy io_uring send request allocates a new ubuf_info. However, as an skb can carry only one uarg, it may force the stack to create many small skbs hurting performance in many ways. The patchset implements notification, i.e. an io_uring's ubuf_info extension, stacking. It attempts to link ubuf_info's into a list, allowing to have multiple of them per skb. liburing/examples/send-zerocopy shows up 6 times performance improvement for TCP with 4KB bytes per send, and levels it with MSG_ZEROCOPY. Without the patchset it requires much larger sends to utilise all potential. bytes | before | after (Kqps) 1200 | 195 | 1023 4000 | 193 | 1386 8000 | 154 | 1058 ==================== Link: https://lore.kernel.org/all/cover.1713369317.git.asml.silence@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2024-04-22net: extend ubuf_info callback to ops structurePavel Begunkov
We'll need to associate additional callbacks with ubuf_info, introduce a structure holding ubuf_info callbacks. Apart from a more smarter io_uring notification management introduced in next patches, it can be used to generalise msg_zerocopy_put_abort() and also store ->sg_from_iter, which is currently passed in struct msghdr. 2024-04-11net: move skb ref helpers to new headerMina Almasry
Add a new header, linux/skbuff_ref.h, which contains all the skb_*_ref() helpers. Many of the consumers of skbuff.h do not actually use any of the skb ref helpers, and we can speed up compilation a bit by minimizing this header file. Additionally in the later patch in the series we add page_pool support to skb_frag_ref(), which requires some page_pool dependencies. We can now add these dependencies to skbuff_ref.h instead of a very ubiquitous skbuff.h Signed-off-by: Mina Almasry <almasrymina@google.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240410190505.1225848-2-almasrymina@google.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

2024-02-01xen-netback: properly sync TX responsesJan Beulich
Invoking the make_tx_response() / push_tx_responses() pair with no lock held would be acceptable only if all such invocations happened from the same context (NAPI instance or dealloc thread). Since this isn't the case, and since the interface "spec" also doesn't demand that multicast operations may only be performed with no in-flight transmits, MCAST_{ADD,DEL} processing also needs to acquire the response lock around the invocations. To prevent similar mistakes going forward, "downgrade" the present functions to private helpers of just the two remaining ones using them directly, with no forward declarations anymore. This involves renaming what so far was make_tx_response(), for the new function of that name to serve the new (wrapper) purpose. While there, - constify the txp parameters, - correct xenvif_idx_release()'s status parameter's type, - rename {,_}make_tx_response()'s status parameters for consistency with xenvif_idx_release()'s. 2024-01-08xen-netback: don't produce zero-size SKB fragsJan Beulich
While frontends may submit zero-size requests (wasting a precious slot), core networking code as of at least 3ece782693c4b ("sock: skb_copy_ubufs support for compound pages") can't deal with SKBs when they have all zero-size fragments. Respond to empty requests right when populating fragments; all further processing is fragment based and hence won't encounter these empty requests anymore. In a way this should have been that way from the beginning: When no data is to be transferred for a particular request, there's not even a point in validating the respective grant ref. That's no different from e.g. passing NULL into memcpy() when at the same time the size is 0. This is XSA-448 / CVE-2023-46838. 2023-08-03xen/netback: Fix buffer overrun triggered by unusual packetRoss Lagerwall
It is possible that a guest can send a packet that contains a head + 18 slots and yet has a len <= XEN_NETBACK_TX_COPY_LEN. This causes nr_slots to underflow in xenvif_get_requests() which then causes the subsequent loop's termination condition to be wrong, causing a buffer overrun of queue->tx_map_ops. Rework the code to account for the extra frag_overflow slots. This is CVE-2023-34319 / XSA-432. 2023-05-29xen/netback: Pass (void *) to virt_to_page()Linus Walleij
virt_to_page() takes a virtual address as argument but the driver passes an unsigned long, which works because the target platform(s) uses polymorphic macros to calculate the page. Since many architectures implement virt_to_pfn() as a macro, this function becomes polymorphic and accepts both a (unsigned long) and a (void *). Fix this up by an explicit (void *) cast. 2023-05-13net: introduce and use skb_frag_fill_page_desc()Yunsheng Lin
Most users use __skb_frag_set_page()/skb_frag_off_set()/ skb_frag_size_set() to fill the page desc for a skb frag. Introduce skb_frag_fill_page_desc() to do that. net/bpf/test_run.c does not call skb_frag_off_set() to set the offset, "copy_from_user(page_address(page), ...)" and 'shinfo' being part of the 'data' kzalloced in bpf_test_init() suggest that it is assuming offset to be initialized as zero, so call skb_frag_fill_page_desc() with offset being zero for this case. 2022-12-06xen/netback: Ensure protocol headers don't fall in the non-linear areaRoss Lagerwall
In some cases, the frontend may send a packet where the protocol headers are spread across multiple slots. This would result in netback creating an skb where the protocol headers spill over into the non-linear area. Some drivers and NICs don't handle this properly resulting in an interface reset or worse. This issue was introduced by the removal of an unconditional skb pull in the tx path to improve performance. Fix this without reintroducing the pull by setting up grant copy ops for as many slots as needed to reach the XEN_NETBACK_TX_COPY_LEN size. Adjust the rest of the code to handle multiple copy operations per skb. This is XSA-423 / CVE-2022-3643. 2019-12-26xen-netback: support dynamic unbind/bindPaul Durrant
By re-attaching RX, TX, and CTL rings during connect() rather than assuming they are freshly allocated (i.e. assuming the counters are zero), and avoiding forcing state to Closed in netback_remove() it is possible for vif instances to be unbound and re-bound from and to (respectively) a running guest. Dynamic unbind/bind is a highly useful feature for a backend module as it allows it to be unloaded and re-loaded (i.e. updated) without requiring domUs to be halted. This has been tested by running iperf as a server in the test VM and then running a client against it in a continuous loop, whilst also running: while true; do echo vif-$DOMID-$VIF >unbind; echo down; rmmod xen-netback; echo unloaded; modprobe xen-netback; cd $(pwd); brctl addif xenbr0 vif$DOMID.$VIF; ip link set vif$DOMID.$VIF up; echo up; sleep 5; done in dom0 from /sys/bus/xen-backend/drivers/vif to continuously unbind, unload, re-load, re-bind and re-plumb the backend. Clearly a performance drop was seen but no TCP connection resets were observed during this test and moreover a parallel SSH connection into the guest remained perfectly usable throughout. 2019-02-28xen-netback: fix occasional leak of grant ref mappings under memory pressureIgor Druzhinin
Zero-copy callback flag is not yet set on frag list skb at the moment xenvif_handle_frag_list() returns -ENOMEM. This eventually results in leaking grant ref mappings since xenvif_zerocopy_callback() is never called for these fragments. Those eventually build up and cause Xen to kill Dom0 as the slots get reused for new mappings: "d0v0 Attempt to implicitly unmap a granted PTE c010000329fce005" That behavior is observed under certain workloads where sudden spikes of page cache writes coexist with active atomic skb allocations from network traffic. Additionally, rework the logic to deal with frag_list deallocation in a single place. 2019-02-22net: Don't set transport offset to invalid valueMaxim Mikityanskiy
If the socket was created with socket(AF_PACKET, SOCK_RAW, 0), skb->protocol will be unset, __skb_flow_dissect() will fail, and skb_probe_transport_header() will fall back to the offset_hint, making the resulting skb_transport_offset incorrect. If, however, there is no transport header in the packet, transport_header shouldn't be set to an arbitrary value. Fix it by leaving the transport offset unset if it couldn't be found, to be explicit rather than to fill it with some wrong value. It changes the behavior, but if some code relied on the old behavior, it would be broken anyway, as the old one is incorrect. 2017-01-29xen/netback: set default upper limit of tx/rx queues to 8Juergen Gross
The default for the maximum number of tx/rx queues of one interface is the number of cpus of the system today. As each queue pair reserves 512 grant pages this default consumes a ridiculous number of grants for large guests. Limit the queue number to 8 as default. This value can be modified via a module parameter if required. 2016-10-06xen-netback: separate guest side rx code into separate modulePaul Durrant
The netback source module has become very large and somewhat confusing. This patch simply moves all code related to the backend to frontend (i.e guest side rx) data-path into a separate rx source module. This patch contains no functional change, it is code movement and minimal changes to avoid patch style-check issues. Signed-off-by: Paul Durrant <paul.durrant@citrix.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
