2024-12-03genirq/proc: Add missing space separator backThomas Gleixner
The recent conversion of show_interrupts() to seq_put_decimal_ull_width() caused a formatting regression as it drops a previosuly existing space separator. Add it back by unconditionally inserting a space after the interrupt counts and removing the extra leading space from the chip name prints. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull interrupt subsystem updates from Thomas Gleixner: "Tree wide: - Make nr_irqs static to the core code and provide accessor functions to remove existing and prevent future aliasing problems with local variables or function arguments of the same name. Core code: - Prevent freeing an interrupt in the devres code which is not managed by devres in the first place. - Use seq_put_decimal_ull_width() for decimal values output in /proc/interrupts which increases performance significantly as it avoids parsing the format strings over and over. - Optimize raising the timer and hrtimer soft interrupts by using the 'set bit only' variants instead of the combined version which checks whether ksoftirqd should be woken up. The latter is a pointless exercise as both soft interrupts are raised in the context of the timer interrupt and therefore never wake up ksoftirqd. - Delegate timer/hrtimer soft interrupt processing to a dedicated thread on RT. Timer and hrtimer soft interrupts are always processed in ksoftirqd on RT enabled kernels. This can lead to high latencies when other soft interrupts are delegated to ksoftirqd as well. The separate thread allows to run them seperately under a RT scheduling policy to reduce the latency overhead. Drivers: - New drivers or extensions of existing drivers to support Renesas RZ/V2H(P), Aspeed AST27XX, T-HEAD C900 and ATMEL sam9x7 interrupt chips - Support for multi-cluster GICs on MIPS. MIPS CPUs can come with multiple CPU clusters, where each CPU cluster has its own GIC (Generic Interrupt Controller). This requires to access the GIC of a remote cluster through a redirect register block. This is encapsulated into a set of helper functions to keep the complexity out of the actual code paths which handle the GIC details. - Support for encrypted guests in the ARM GICV3 ITS driver The ITS page needs to be shared with the hypervisor and therefore must be decrypted. - Small cleanups and fixes all over the place" * tag 'irq-core-2024-11-18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (50 commits) irqchip/riscv-aplic: Prevent crash when MSI domain is missing genirq/proc: Use seq_put_decimal_ull_width() for decimal values softirq: Use a dedicated thread for timer wakeups on PREEMPT_RT. timers: Use __raise_softirq_irqoff() to raise the softirq. hrtimer: Use __raise_softirq_irqoff() to raise the softirq riscv: defconfig: Enable T-HEAD C900 ACLINT SSWI drivers irqchip: Add T-HEAD C900 ACLINT SSWI driver dt-bindings: interrupt-controller: Add T-HEAD C900 ACLINT SSWI device irqchip/stm32mp-exti: Use of_property_present() for non-boolean properties irqchip/mips-gic: Fix selection of GENERIC_IRQ_EFFECTIVE_AFF_MASK irqchip/mips-gic: Prevent indirect access to clusters without CPU cores irqchip/mips-gic: Multi-cluster support irqchip/mips-gic: Setup defaults in each cluster irqchip/mips-gic: Support multi-cluster in for_each_online_cpu_gic() irqchip/mips-gic: Replace open coded online CPU iterations genirq/irqdesc: Use str_enabled_disabled() helper in wakeup_show() genirq/devres: Don't free interrupt which is not managed by devres irqchip/gic-v3-its: Fix over allocation in itt_alloc_pool() irqchip/aspeed-intc: Add AST27XX INTC support dt-bindings: interrupt-controller: Add support for ASPEED AST27XX INTC ...
2024-11-13genirq/proc: Use seq_put_decimal_ull_width() for decimal valuesDavid Wang
seq_printf() is more expensive than seq_put_decimal_ull_width() due to the format string parsing costs. Profiling on a x86 8-core system indicates seq_printf() takes ~47% samples of show_interrupts(). Replacing it with seq_put_decimal_ull_width() yields almost 30% performance gain. 2024-10-24genirq/devres: Don't free interrupt which is not managed by devresZijun Hu
If devres_destroy() does not find a matching devres entry, then devm_free_irq() emits a warning and tries to free the interrupt. That's wrong as devm_free_irq() should only undo what devm_request_irq() set up. Replace devres_destroy() with a call to devres_release() which only invokes the release function (free_irq()) in case that a matching devres entry was found. 2024-10-16genirq: Unexport nr_irqsBart Van Assche

2024-10-16genirq: Switch to irq_get_nr_irqs()Bart Van Assche
Use the irq_get_nr_irqs() function instead of the global variable 'nr_irqs'. Cache the result of this function in a local variable in order not to rely on CSE (common subexpression elimination). 2024-10-16genirq: Introduce irq_get_nr_irqs() and irq_set_nr_irqs()Bart Van Assche
Prepare for changing 'nr_irqs' from an exported global variable into a variable with file scope. This will prevent accidental changes of assignments to a local variable 'nr_irqs' into assignments to the global 'nr_irqs' variable. Suppose that a patch would be submitted for review that removes a declaration of a local variable with the name 'nr_irqs' and that that patch does not remove all assignments to that local variable. Such a patch converts an assignment to a local variable into an assignment into a global variable. If the 'nr_irqs' assignment is more than three lines away from other changes, the assignment won't be included in the diff context lines and hence won't be visible without inspecting the modified file. With these abstraction series applied, such accidental conversions from assignments to a local variable into an assignment to a global variable are converted into a compilation error. 2024-08-29genirq/proc: Correctly set file permissions for affinity control filesJeff Xie
The kernel already knows at the time of interrupt allocation whether affinity of an interrupt can be controlled by userspace or not. 2024-08-27genirq: Get rid of global lock in irq_do_set_affinity()Marc Zyngier
Kunkun Jiang reports that for a workload involving the simultaneous startup of a large number of VMs (for a total of about 200 vcpus), a lot of CPU time gets spent on spinning on the tmp_mask_lock that exists as a static raw spinlock in irq_do_set_affinity(). This lock protects a global cpumask (tmp_mask) that is used as a temporary variable to compute the resulting affinity. While this is triggered by KVM issuing a irq_set_affinity() call each time a vcpu is about to execute, it is obvious that having a single global resource is not very scalable. Since a cpumask can be a fairly large structure on systems with a high core count, a stack allocation is not really appropriate. Instead, turn the global cpumask into a per-CPU variable, removing the need for locking altogether as the code is executed with preemption and interrupts disabled. 2024-08-20irqdomain: Always associate interrupts for legacy domainsMatti Vaittinen
The unification of irq_domain_create_legacy() missed the fact that interrupts must be associated even when the Linux interrupt number provided in the first_irq argument is 0. This breaks all call sites of irq_domain_create_legacy() which supply 0 as the first_irq argument. Enforce the association for legacy domains in __irq_domain_instantiate() to cure this. 2024-08-09irqdomain: Allow giving name suffix for domainMatti Vaittinen
Devices can provide multiple interrupt lines. One reason for this is that a device has multiple subfunctions, each providing its own interrupt line. Another reason is that a device can be designed to be used (also) on a system where some of the interrupts can be routed to another processor. A line often further acts as a demultiplex for specific interrupts and has it's respective set of interrupt (status, mask, ack, ...) registers. Regmap supports the handling of these registers and demultiplexing interrupts, but the interrupt domain code ends up assigning the same name for the per interrupt line domains. This causes a naming collision in the debugFS code and leads to confusion, as /proc/interrupts shows two separate interrupts with the same domain name and hardware interrupt number. Instead of adding a workaround in regmap or driver code, allow giving a name suffix for the domain name when the domain is created. Add a name_suffix field in the irq_domain_info structure and make irq_domain_instantiate() use this suffix if it is given when a domain is created. 2024-08-09irqdomain: Simplify simple and legacy domain creationMatti Vaittinen
irq_domain_create_simple() and irq_domain_create_legacy() use __irq_domain_instantiate(), but have extra handling of allocating interrupt descriptors and associating interrupts in them. Some of that is duplicated. There are also call sites which have conditonals to invoke different interrupt domain creator functions, where one of them is usually irq_domain_create_legacy(). Alternatively they associate the interrupts for the legacy case after creating the domain. Moving the extra logic of irq_domain_create_simple()/legacy() into __irq_domain_instantiate() allows to consolidate that. Introduce hwirq_base and virq_base members in the irq_domain_info structure, which allows to transport the required information and add the conditional interrupt descriptor allocation and interrupt association into __irq_domain_instantiate(). This reduces irq_domain_create_legacy() and irq_domain_create_simple() to trivial wrappers which fill in the info structure and allows call sites which must support the legacy case along with more modern mechanism to select the domain type via the parameters of the info struct. 2024-08-07genirq/irqdesc: Honor caller provided affinity in alloc_desc()Shay Drory
Currently, whenever a caller is providing an affinity hint for an interrupt, the allocation code uses it to calculate the node and copies the cpumask into irq_desc::affinity. If the affinity for the interrupt is not marked 'managed' then the startup of the interrupt ignores irq_desc::affinity and uses the system default affinity mask. Prevent this by setting the IRQD_AFFINITY_SET flag for the interrupt in the allocator, which causes irq_setup_affinity() to use irq_desc::affinity on interrupt startup if the mask contains an online CPU. 2024-07-29genirq/msi: Silence 'set affinity failed' warningMarek Vasut
Various PCI controllers that mux MSIs onto a single IRQ line produce these "IRQ%d: set affinity failed" warnings when entering suspend. This has been discussed before [1] [2] and an example test case is included at the end of this commit message. Controller drivers that create MSI IRQ domain with MSI_FLAG_USE_DEF_CHIP_OPS and do not override the .irq_set_affinity() irqchip callback get assigned the default msi_domain_set_affinity() callback. That is not desired on controllers where it is not possible to set affinity of each MSI IRQ line to a specific CPU core due to hardware limitation. Introduce flag MSI_FLAG_NO_AFFINITY, which keeps .irq_set_affinity() unset if the controller driver did not assign it. This way, migrate_one_irq() can exit right away, without printing the warning. The .irq_set_affinity() implementations which only return -EINVAL can be removed from multiple controller drivers. $ grep 25 /proc/interrupts 25: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 PCIe MSI 0 Edge PCIe PME $ echo core > /sys/power/pm_test ; echo mem > /sys/power/state ... 2024-06-17irqdomain: Add support for generic irq chips creation before publishing a domainHerve Codina
The current API functions create an irq_domain and also publish this newly created to domain. Once an irq_domain is published, consumers can request IRQ in order to use them. Some interrupt controller drivers have to perform some more operations with the created irq_domain in order to have it ready to be used. For instance: - Allocate generic irq chips with irq_alloc_domain_generic_chips() - Retrieve the generic irq chips with irq_get_domain_generic_chip() - Initialize retrieved chips: set register base address and offsets, set several hooks such as irq_mask, irq_unmask, ... With the newly introduced irq_domain_alloc_generic_chips(), an interrupt controller driver can use the irq_domain_chip_generic_info structure and set the init() hook to perform its generic chips initialization. In order to avoid a window where the domain is published but not yet ready to be used, handle the generic chip creation (i.e the irq_domain_alloc_generic_chips() call) before the domain is published.
